Mehndi — also spelt henna — is the art of staining skin with a paste made from crushed lawsonia leaves. What starts as a bright orange line deepens over 48 hours into a rich maroon, and that slow reveal is half the pleasure. This gallery collects simple mehndi designs a beginner can finish in ten minutes alongside bridal mehndi designs that take an artist an entire afternoon.
Search by what you actually need. Looking for something for the back hand? Filter to back hand patterns where one bold motif carries the whole design. Doing the front hand or palm? Those stain darkest, so fine detail like jaal netting and chequerboard filling holds beautifully. Need something for a child before a festival? The kids section keeps to thick strokes and single motifs children will sit still for.
Arabic mehndi design is diagonal, bold and fast — florals and vines running from the index finger to the wrist with plenty of bare skin left as contrast. Indian mehndi is symmetrical and dense, built on paisleys, peacocks and fine net work. Pakistani mehndi sits between them, and Dubai style refines the Arabic diagonal into thin, heavily shaded flowing lines. Minimal mehndi — single stems, small mandalas, three dots on a finger — has become the most requested modern style for anyone who wants henna that suits everyday clothes.
Use fresh henna powder, let the mixed paste rest 6 to 12 hours before applying, keep it on your skin for at least 6 hours, dab it with lemon and sugar once it dries, scrape it off rather than washing, then oil the area and avoid water for 12 hours. Palms and fingertips will always come out darkest; feet and forearms lightest. Never use "black henna" — it contains PPD and causes chemical burns.
Start with a simple round tikki on the palm or a single Arabic vine on the back of the hand. Both are built from one repeated stroke, so small mistakes blend into the pattern instead of standing out.

Simple mehndi uses small, sparse motifs anywhere on the hand. Arabic mehndi specifically runs as a bold diagonal band of florals and vines from the index finger to the wrist, leaving the rest of the skin bare.
At least 6 to 8 hours for a deep colour. Scrape the dried paste off rather than washing it, then avoid water for another 12 hours while the stain darkens.
